Acomplia is a CBI (Cannabinoid-1 Receptor Blocker) drug used in the treatment of weight loss for people suffering with obesity. The active ingredient is rimonabant which is formulated as oral tablets in strengths of 10mg and 20mg.
Drug Uses
Acomplia is available by prescription only. Acomplia is used to treat obesity. This drug works on certain brain receptors to reduce appetite, thereby resulting in weight loss. Acomplia is also used as part of a smoking cessation program as the active ingredient, rimonabant, reportedly reduces the craving for nicotine. Acomplia is prescribed to patients who are obese and therefore at risk of a heart attack or stroke. This drug can also reduce high cholesterol.
Studies have revealed that weight loss achieved was only maintained during treatment with Acomplia. After stopping treatment with Acomplia, some people reported that they gained half the weight lost while using Acomplia. Therefore, it is important to eat a healthy, low-fat, calorie-restricted diet and exercise regularly during and after treatment with Acomplia.
Dosage
The recommended dose is 20mg taken in the morning ON AN EMPTY STOMACH with a full glass of water. For best results do not eat for one hour after the dose.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, consult your doctor.
Precautions
Acomplia should only be used by people who have a BMI=30kg/m2, or people who have a BMI=27kg/m2 who have type 2 diabetes or dyslipidemia (a blood lipid disorder). Acomplia is not for use by people who have a BMI (body mass index) of less than 30.
Before using Acomplia ensure that your doctor has a full knowledge of your medical history, and details of any other medications you are using because Acomplia may react badly with certain medications.
Acomplia should not be used by children under the age of 18, or elderly people over the age of 75, because there is insufficient data on the effects this drug may have on these age-groups.
Do not use Acomplia if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Discuss this with your doctor.
Pregnant women and women who are breast-feeding should discuss the risks of using Acomplia with their doctors.
Acomplia should be used in combination with a healthy, low-calorie diet and a regular exercise program.
People with certain medical disorders may react badly to Acomplia, particularly those with liver impairment.
Acomplia should be used with extreme caution by people with a history of psychiatric illnesses and people who have showed suicidal tendencies or people with major depressive disorder.
The effects of long-term use of Acomplia have not been established.
Side-effects
No serious side-effects have been reported while using Acomplia. However, mild side-effects may include muscle cramps, dizziness, insomnia, upset stomach, nausea, or diarrhea. These symptoms are usually temporary and should disappear quickly.
Overdose
If overdose with Acomplia is suspected, get emergency assistance immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include fatigue, headache, euphoria, or insomnia.
Storage
Acomplia should be kept in a cool, dry place away from sun and moisture.
